Dr Julianne
O'Reilly-Wapstra was invited to attend the 2020 Summit in April
and to contribute to the “future directions for rural
industries and rural communities” theme.
“This turned out to be a very interesting,
positive and productive experience,” says Julianne, of the
CRC for Forestry and the University of Tasmania (School of Plant
Science).
“The key point I wanted to discuss at the
summit was how to increase and improve knowledge transfer and
extension between researchers and industry partners or end users;
as too often there is a gap here.”
“I did have the opportunity to discuss
this with my sub-group and it was agreed that this is something
deserving of greater attention. All individual ideas were noted by
scribes and were written into the final report for consideration by
the government”.
“Future directions for rural industries
and rural communities” was one of the 10 themes discussed by
the 1,000 delegates that attended.
One hundred delegates contributed to this theme,
which was chaired by former Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Tim
Fischer.
The group was further divided into sub-groups to
focus discussion on agriculture, communities, infrastructure, small
to medium enterprises, tourism and research and development.
At the end of the first day each sub-group reported back to the
larger theme group with a ranking of their top priorities and
ideas. There were 32 priorities in total and the following were
voted as the top four areas that needed addressing:
1) Response to
climate change
2) Nationwide
harmonisation and standardisation
3) Incentives for
sustainability
4) Attract, recruit
and retain people in rural areas.
Ideas about how to address these issues were
consolidated on the second day and a preliminary summit report was
presented to the Prime Minister during the closing session.
For detailed information on the priority
themes and ideas (and to look at the ideas from the other nine
theme areas) you can view the final
report.
