The CRC for Forestry welcomes new PhD student
Mia Spain, who commenced her studies at Southern Cross University
with Project 2.3 (Impact of silviculture
interventions on wood quality into plantation estate
management) in January.
Mia completed an undergraduate degree at Southern Cross
University in 2006, and went on to complete Honours in 2007,
while working full time as a bush regenerator on the Gold
Coast.
Mia's PhD project examines the effects of silviculture on
wood quality in subtropical eucalypt plantations.
"I work as part of a team within the
university, and meet and work with interesting and knowledgeable
people from industry," says Mia.
"Post graduate study was something I had never considered
before, I wasn’t even planning to go to university! However,
through the Southern Cross
University undergraduate course I gained understanding of
both production forestry and environmental stewardship."
"I worked for BIL Technologies, a local business providing
product development and research to its timber industry based
clients. Through working at BIL Tech, and the experiences and
knowledge gained during my degree, I knew I wanted a career in
research.”
The CRC also welcomes
back Dr Carolyn Raymond, who led wood quality research in
the CRC
for Sustainable Production Forestry, and is now an Adjunct
Professor at Southern Cross
University. Carolyn will co-supervise Mia’s research.
